New York City is, without a doubt, the ultimate city.
From the food, to the culture, to the iconic landmarks, New York sets the tone for what it means to be a city worldwide. As a result, it’s a bit overwhelming for tourists visiting the city for the first time to see the sights, because there’s just so many things to see. New York City attractions number in the thousands, and just deciding which ones to see can take at least a day to decide.
A day is too long to waste in the fast pace city of New York, however, so to speed the process along we’ve identified some of the top New York City attractions you’ll want to see when you visit the Big Apple.
For starters, any visit to New York must include a stop at the Empire State Building. Because of the unfortunate events of Sept. 11, the Empire State Building is once again New York’s tallest building. From the top of the building you can see the city skyline from a commanding view point.
If heights aren’t your thing, a great New York City attraction is Central Park. For more than a century, the park has offered New York residents a respite from the hustle and bustle of the asphalt jungle of the city streets.
Be sure to take a look at Broadway. The theatre district holds more than 40 venues holding seats of 500 or more and is the largest commercial theatre district in the world. Last year sales of tickets to theatrical shows accounted for $937 million in revenue.
Another prime New York City attraction is the Statue of Liberty. Gifted to America from France, the statue has become an iconic representation of the hope America holds for immigrants from around the world.
Times Square is another iconic New York landmark. Laden with historic businesses and attractions, Times Square is the heart of New York. The well-known landmark is often featured in Hollywood films and television series, and a yearly New Year’s Eve celebration there is broadcast around the world.
Rockefeller Center, in midtown Manhattan, offers a wide variety of awesome entertainment and shopping opportunities.
Any visit to New York City should include at least a brief stopover at the 9/11 memorial site. The site is where the Twin Towers once stood, prior to the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks which resulted in their collapse. Visiting the site evokes a unique sense of respect for the lives lost on that day, and the resiliency of the city of New York to recover from such a catastrophe.
These are just a few of the great shopping and sight-seeing opportunities the city has to offer. This is by no means a comprehensive list of everything New York has to offer, but it is a great starting point for the newcomer to the city.
